Foster Notes 10/8/2026

Summary of foster notes: Almondie has been in foster for 10 months in a two-adult home. She has free roam of the home and can be left alone for up to 8 hours. Almondie continues to display leash reactivity toward other dogs and may pull on leash in unfamiliar environments. She also shows interest in chasing small animals when they move or run. Almondie is very social with unfamiliar people, approaching with a wagging tail and leaning in for petting. She has also been gentle and affectionate with children, though her foster recommends an adult-only home. Almondie knows several cues and continues to participate in training activities. She enjoys walks, sniffing, playing with toys, and relaxing at home. Foster recommends a quiet, experienced home that can continue managing her leash reactivity and prey drive.

Medical Condition 1/5/2026

Diagnosis: Pyoderma

The pet you are adopting has been diagnosed with a skin condition known as Pyoderma during their time at OAS. This is an infection of the hair follicles and skin that is not contagious to other pets or to humans. It is commonly treated with antibiotics and medicated shampoos. Occasionally, other medications such as anti-inflammatories may need to be prescribed. Pyoderma is often secondary to allergic dermatitis (allergies that cause skin irritation). Occasionally additional or ongoing treatment for underlying allergies may be required, but not in all cases. This pet may still be in the process of being treated at the time of adoption. If this is the case, adopters will be sent with the remaining course of medications and expected to recheck with their veterinarian for continued care. This animal should have a general health exam with a veterinarian as soon as possible after adoption. Your veterinarian can make further medical recommendations for testing and medical treatment if needed.

Medical Condition 1/5/2026

Diagnosis: Heart Murmur

The pet you are adopting has been diagnosed with a heart murmur. Heart murmurs in animals may be benign (meaning they do not indicate any underlying heart disease) or they can be a sign of heart disease. At this time, the animal you are adopting is not showing any signs of heart disease or failure. In order to diagnose the underlying cause of a heart murmur an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) is required. This animal should have a general health exam with a veterinarian as soon as possible after adoption. Your veterinarian can make further medical recommendations for testing and medical treatment if needed. OAS is not responsible for additional care post adoption.

Handling Eval 10/16/2025

Right at door on approach, ate treats in kennel, easy to leash. Pulls moderately outside, eliminated twice immediately. Dog likely holds it. Knows sit and takes treats gently. Lures into a down. Very affiliative with handler, climbed into lap, ran zoomies around KC yard. Showed interest in toys but no play. Allows all over touch, head, ears, hind, belly, and teeth check. Remained with waggy tail, loose body during outing. Easy to rekennel.B Sweet, middle-aged dog with a little bit of obedience training.

Dog-To-Dog Evaluation 10/12/2025

S: Dog-dog evaluation with a male and female dog.B

O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. Inside the yard, dog walked past testers to explore the yard and eliminate. Male tester approached, this dog turned to sniff. Walked away and remained by herself for the remainder of the evaluation.

A: Independent, Low Energy, Low Contact, Neutral Social Dynamic, no Corrections or Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 2-3.

P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

Description

Almondie is a 7-year-old, 51-pound pittie mix with a joyful spirit and a zest for life. This sweet, wiggly girl arrived at the shelter with an injured eye and badly irritated skin. The eye was removed, and her skin condition has vastly improved with diet and care thanks to her loving foster home.

While she’s technically a senior, Almondie has pep in her step and is always ready for an adventure. She loves car rides, walks, and hikes. She thrives with regular exercise and enrichment, is house-trained, and can relax at home by herself during your full workday.

A true people-lover, Almondie leans in for pets, shares hugs, and seeks lap time. She’s incredibly food-motivated and loves training, showing off skills like sit, shake, down, stay, spin, touch, and place. On leash, Almondie walks well but prefers space away from other dogs. She may do best as a solo dog or with a carefully matched canine companion.

Almondie moves through the world with a tail that never stops wagging. If you’re looking for a cuddly, clever, adventure-ready best friend, this is your girl! Follow her in foster with @camp_mildred_ on Instagram, and click here to learn how to adopt and submit your adoption questionnaire.
