Foster Notes 9/30/2026

Summary of foster notes: Marvel has been in foster for 10 days with two adults, a resident dog, and a cat; she is crate trained, can be left alone for about six hours, and has had no full potty accidents since her first day, although she has attempted to mark the carpet a few times. She is very social and playful with the resident dog, showing loose, playful behaviors including play bows, chasing, and appropriate shared tug play, but she frequently barks at unfamiliar dogs she sees on walks or from the car and can be difficult to redirect, with this behavior decreasing after exercise. Marvel can calmly pass the resident cat but will chase if the cat runs, although the foster reports she stops after catching up and has not attempted physical interaction. She walks easily without pulling, approaches people enthusiastically and may jump to greet, enjoys both active play and relaxing close to people, and knows sit, down, and come, although she does not consistently respond to her name yet. Marvel could potentially do well in a variety of homes, including with another compatible dog, and would benefit from continued positive-reinforcement training focused on calm behavior and disengagement around unfamiliar dogs, polite greetings, and rewarding attention to her handler rather than using corrections for barking.

Dog-To-Dog Evaluation 8/7/2026

S: Dog-dog evaluation during AM playgroups.

O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. Slow to enter the yard and once inside, turned away from the dogs and moved to a corner. Stayed in the corner as the other dogs sniffed her, then moved to follow them as they walked away. Gave several corrections (showed teeth, quick snap, no contact) when dogs approached rapidly, but quickly recovered and followed them around a bit. Mostly stayed by herself during the hour duration.B

A: Independent, Medium Energy, Low Contact, Defers, Gives Corrections, Avoids Conflict, Playgroup Size 5-10.

P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

Handling Eval 3/26/2026

Owner surrender from an unplanned litter.B Friendly, playful, energetic puppy, will need continued appropriate socialization with new people, places and other animals, and positive reinforcement/rewards based training. Training should begin immediately before this puppy learns unwanted behaviors and becomes difficult to control. Adopter must be prepared for the time, energy, patience and commitment needed to raise and train a puppy, and be prepared for the exercise and mental enrichment needed from a growing large breed puppy.

Description

Marvel is an 8-month-old, 42-pound shepherd/pittie mix who loves playing, exploring, training, and cuddling. She’s especially enthusiastic about other dogs and loves a good wrestling session, but she also has a wonderful ability to settle. Once the excitement wears off, she’s happy to relax alongside her people and canine friends.

Marvel is smart, treat-motivated, and eager to learn. She already knows “sit” and made good progress with house and crate training. Like many young dogs, she’s still learning her manners and may bark, jump up, or offer gentle puppy nips when excited. She’s easily redirected and is learning that hands aren’t toys.

She did very well with the resident dog in her temporary foster home, responding appropriately to corrections and transitioning easily from play to relaxation. She also spent time around the resident cat and learned to respect their boundaries with supervision.

Marvel will thrive with an active adopter ready to provide plenty of exercise, enrichment, play, and positive-reinforcement training. She’s a bright, affectionate, social puppy with so much potential!
