Laverne

Edit Animal Info

⚠️ This animal has a medical disclosure. Please review the medical conditions note below with the potential adopter.

In-Shelter Summary 8/4/2026

Laverne presents as timid in the kennel, but begins to trust and engage quickly once outside. She has demonstrated interest in other dogs when on leash which could translate as leash reactivity in some instances, though easily redirected. Smart and cuddly but likes affection in her own terms. Due to initial shy nature, handling sensitivities and possible leash reactivity, Laverne should not be matched with PAs with young children in the home.

Medical Condition 10/8/2026

Symptom: Seizure

The dog you are adopting experienced a single seizure approximately one day after receiving an isoxazoline flea medication. Medications in the isoxazoline class (bravecto, nexgard, simparica, credilio, etc.) have rarely been associated with neurologic side effects, including tremors and seizures, in some dogs. Based on the timing, the medication is suspected to have contributed to this episode. No additional seizures have been observed. However, it is not possible to completely rule out other potential causes of seizures without more extensive diagnostic testing. Because of this history, adopters should speak with their veterinarian before giving any flea or tick medication in the future, including products in the isoxazoline class. Your veterinarian can help determine an appropriate parasite prevention plan and discuss safer alternatives. If another seizure occurs, or if any other neurologic changes are noted, veterinary evaluation is recommended.

Foster Notes 9/2/2026

Summary of foster notes:Laverne has been in foster for 3 weeks in a single-adult home and has had no accidents, though she takes a long time to become comfortable enough to urinate outside; this has improved from once daily during her first 2 weeks to 2bx003 times daily. She has free roam of the home and can be left alone for up to 4 hours. On walks, Laverne may bark, growl, and lunge toward other dogs but can usually be redirected; she may also react when people run toward her. She is friendly with unfamiliar people, approaching to sniff and then wagging her tail, and has done well around children, though foster feels older children may be a better fit due to her sensitivity to quick movements. Laverne knows sit and touch and otherwise walks well on leash. Foster describes her as sweet and recommends continued work on her leash reactivity around dogs.

Handling Eval 7/28/2026

Background: Dog came in stray on 7/23. Was assigned Green at intake. Volunteers observed issues at kennel gate with defensive/reactive behavior changed to yellow. Evaluated and remains Yellow dog.Kennel presentation & leashing: Lying on bed on approach, walked gently to gate, easy to leash with mild avoidance of loop.Relief walk: Some zig-zagging on walk down the hall to yard but no pulling, stopping or leash pressure needed.Handling: Solicited pets from handler in the yard, climbing into the lap and curling up, allowing full body petting. Moved away after a bit and sunbathed, heating up. Grabbed leash to move back to the shade and walked nicely beside me. Cuddles in the lap with face approaching handlers face - allowing full pets on face, nice, head and body. When lying on the ground, snapped when tester tried touching front paws - some handling sensitivity to paws. When approached wags tail nicely and rolls over to have belly rubbed but handlers should use caution given sensitivity to some handling on legs/feet.Arousal/play/toy: No interest in playing toys but did respond to squeaky noise in other yard. No arousal observed. Low/med energy with handler. Propeller tail when talked to and approached. Approached gate where very large dog was on leash, sniffed, gently moved away - no reactivity.Overall: Prior reports of barrier issues at kennel - barking, lunging when kennel door closed. Was not observed but leaving Yellow for now. Overall friendly, cuddly girl but can have moments of discomfort with handler and will snap with sudden movements. Also like attention on her own terms.

Handling Eval 7/25/2026

Moving to Yellow per staff observation, this dog is seemingly afraid and hesitant to approach handler at kennel gate. Volunteer notes describe similar behavior.

Dog-To-Dog Evaluation 7/24/2026

S: Dog-dog evaluation with a male and female tester dog. Tester dogs selected due to their ability to politely greet and not escalate conflict.

O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. Inside the yard, dog was approached by both testers. Briefly sniffed, then turned and walked away. Tail high and swishing back and forth as she wandered around the yard with the testers following. Remained relaxed and independent for the remainder of the evaluation.

A: Independent (possibly Gentle), Medium-Low Energy, Low Contact, Neutral Social Dynamic, no Corrections or Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 2-3.

P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

Description

Laverne – Sweet, Affectionate, and Eager to Learn

Laverne is a 5-year-old, 32-pound sweetheart who loves being with her people.

  • Sweet and affectionate: Laverne enjoys spending time with her people and is always happy to be by their side.
  • Smart and treat-motivated: Laverne is eager to please and already knows “sit” and “touch”. Her love of treats and enthusiasm for learning have also been wonderful assets as she continues building her skills.
  • Well-mannered at home: Laverne is house-trained and settles nicely in the home. She would likely thrive in a home that offers a nice balance of adventures, training, and relaxing time with her person.
  • Working on her confidence: Laverne walks well overall and enjoys exploring. She is friendly with unfamiliar people but can become anxious and reactive when encountering other dogs or runners. She is making progress with positive-reinforcement training and building confidence in these situations.
