In-Shelter Summary 10/11/2026
Kyle is an active, loving puppy that gets up to typical puppy mischief (eating things he shouldn't, dug his way out of the fenced yard, jumping on people). No kids under 12 due to forward nature and jumpiness. His foster reports he is crate trained and can be kept alone in the crate for several hours and overnight, with an early morning (2-5am) potty break. Does well with other dogs. Adopter needs to be prepared for the time and energy required to raise and train a high energy, large breed puppy.

O: Multiple videos provided which show dog in a yard with 2 other dogs. Dog's body language is very loose with open mouth and soft eyes as he engages in play with the other dogs. Some wrestle-style play, but mainly chase-style play between dogs. Foster reports that her other 2 dogs have a rough play style, and this dog takes corrections from them.
A: Chase, Medium Energy, Medium Contact, Neutral Social Dynamic, may Take Corrections, no Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 2-3.
P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

Medical Condition 8/25/2026
This dog was reportedly hit by a car prior to arriving at Oakland Animal Services and was diagnosed with a diaphragmatic hernia. A diaphragmatic hernia occurs when there is a tear in the diaphragm, the muscle separating the chest and abdomen, allowing abdominal organs to move into the chest cavity. The diaphragmatic hernia was surgically repaired. At the two-week recheck, this dog was doing well and appeared completely healed. No long-term complications are anticipated from this injury or surgery. As with any significant previous injury or surgery, adopters should be aware of the animals history and if any concerning signs are noted (difficulty breathing, decreased activity, decreased appetite, vomiting, or other signs of illness), veterinary evaluation is recommended. OAS is not responsible for additional care or costs after adoption.
Description
After being hit by a car, Kyle underwent surgery to repair a diaphragmatic hernia and is now healing beautifully in his foster home. At 10 months old and 46 pounds, this Shepherd mix puppy has a big future ahead of him!
Kyle may look regal as royalty, but really, he’s just one of the guys. This energetic, affectionate pup loves being with his people, whether he’s getting a belly rub, snoozing on your feet, or working on a chew nearby. He is house trained and crate trained, and settles well when left alone or for the night, as long as he’s had a chance to get his wiggles out first.
Kyle is a treat-motivated smarty pants who loves practicing and learning new tricks. He’s also always ready for a game of fetch! He's making great progress with leash manners for walks and jogs—he loves to run!
With his sweet nature and puppy enthusiasm, Kyle is ready to find a loving home with adopters who can keep up with his playful energy and continue helping him learn. Click here to learn how to adopt and submit your adoption questionnaire.
