Staff Notes 9/5/2026

Intake type
Stray intake. Yellow dot.
Handling
Enjoys affection and leaning into handlers for pets. May be sensitive to hats (large-brimmed sun hats triggered barking/growling; baseball caps generally okay). Can show stiff body, hard stare, soft growling at kennel front. Leashes up easily for some handlers; others report hesitation or mild resistance. Takes treats gently at kennel door. Occasionally resists re-kenneling.
Activities/Motivation
Highly food-motivated. Enjoys sniffing, wandering, marking.
Training
Will sit for treats; has offered a down. Needs treats to maintain attention; difficult to engage without food.
Leash etiquette
Generally walks well on leash, sometimes pulls toward other dogs, can be resistant to walking when he wants to sniff or mark.
Reactivity
Can be barrier reactive to certain dogs.
Jumpy/mouthy
Occasional jumping on handler, including repeated jumping during outing. Soft mouthing noted by one volunteer. Jumping decreases with keeping him focused by working on reward-based training using treats or playing "find it" games with treats.
Playgroup
Has not participated in playgroup.
Foster
Has not lived in a foster home.
Offsite
Has not attended an offsite event.

Handling Eval 8/28/2026

Background: Brought in stray for vet care with wounds around neck. Finder had dog in home for one night with no issues. Noted that dog seemed friendly, was scared to get in the car. Given Yellow dot on intake. Did want not walk on leash. Dog tolerated all handling for intake but was uncomfortable with tail tucked. Skin flinched when touched.

O: Lying down in kennel. Stood and walked to the door. Took treats with soft mouth. Easy to leash. Did not engage with barking neighbors. Pulled moderately down the hallway. Sniffed and then marked the fence outside. Marked in several places while walking. Pulled hard to sniff some spots in the yard. Off leash in the yard, stayed in proximity to handler. Stiffened and stood tall watching a dog in an adjacent yard. Turned attention back to handler when distracted by treats. Somewhat stoic and stiff body initially (possibly naturally stiff posture). Did not follow tossed toys. Did not respond to verbal cue to sit. Lured into a sit several times, rewarded with treat. Soft mouth taking treats. Began offering an automatic sit for treats. More relaxed musculature and wagging tail with pets around head, neck, and chest after a few minutes in the yard. Lowered tail and stood still for handling over back and belly then stepped forward with wagging tail for more pets around head. When handler crouched, dog approached and climbed on handler. Handler stood. Dog began jumping up making moderate body contact. Sat for in response to verbal cue and hand signal for sit. Took treat with soft mouth. Walked with handler on leash through the office to meet an new staff person. Dog was somewhat stoic with lowered tail and still body. Stood still while staff person pet him. Soft eyes and took treats with soft mouth. Walked with some moderate to hard pulling down the hall to his kennel. Hesitated and pulled back on leash on rekenneling. Followed handler inside with some sweet talk. Removed slip leash by hand. On a subsequent meeting, dog was very loose and waggy at the front of his kennel with relaxed open mouth and took treats with soft mouth. Dog has a mostly healed neck wound of unknown origin including two puncture wounds and broken teeth on the same side of his neck wound.B

A: Independent but social. Presents as medium energy, which may change once dog is fully recovered from injuries. Treat motivated. Shows enjoyment with pets. Did not show any interest in toys. Can pull hard on leash. Possibly house trained (eliminates on entering the yard). Knows sit. Yellow for volunteer handling d/t pulling, some high arousal jumping with moderate body contact, apparent discomfort with some touch (holds body still with tail low for some touch around back and belly). Crew volunteer and whiteboard notes are consistent with staff notes.

P: Make available for adoption. Adopters should continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Unknown how this dog may behave around children. Dog sometimes exhibits high arousal jumpy behavior with moderate body contact and appears somewhat uncomfortable (holds body still) with some touch which may make a home with young children less suitable.

Medical Condition 8/26/2026

Diagnosis: Otitis

Ear Infections (Otitis Externa): Your pet was treated with ear cleaning and prescription ear medications while in our care. Ear infections in dogs are rarely one-time events and may recur. Pets with a history of otitis often require regular checkups and occasional additional treatment for flare-ups. Underlying allergies are commonly a contributing factor. We recommend scheduling a general health exam with your veterinarian after adoption. Your veterinarian can provide follow-up care, discuss long-term allergy management if needed, and make recommendations for further testing or treatment. OAS is not responsible for additional care or costs post adoption.

Medical Condition 8/26/2026

Diagnosis: Periodontal Disease, 2/4

Dental Disease This pet has moderate dental disease; this may include tartar buildup on teeth, inflamed gums, chronically chipped or fractured teeth, missing teeth, loose teeth, and worn teeth. Based on our resources, Oakland Animals Services is unable to address dental disease. It is recommended you follow up with your regular veterinarian to establish an oral health plan for your pet. This may involve a sedated/anesthetized oral exam, dental radiographs, and treatment plan. Your veterinarian may recommend dental extractions of severely diseased teeth. Ongoing dental care is important throughout your petbx00s lifetime. This animal should have a general health exam with a veterinarian as soon as possible after adoption. Your veterinarian can make further medical recommendations for testing and medical treatment if needed. Dental OAS is not responsible for additional care post adoption.

Dog-To-Dog Evaluation 8/21/2026

S: Dog-dog evaluation with a male tester dog. Tester dog selected due to his ability to politely greet and not escalate conflict.

O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. Marked through the fence. Inside the yard, dog started sniffing the ground, tester watching at a distance. Noticed tester, pulled to approach, tail wagging. Tester moved away, dog followed. Sniffed at testers rear, marked where the tester was. Body language was generally relaxed, but leashes not dropped due to current neck injury on this dog and dog's persistent interest to approach tester.

A: Learning Dog Skills, Medium Energy, Medium Contact, Neutral Social Dynamic, no Corrections or Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 2-3.

P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

Description

Dan – Affectionate, Mellow, and People-Oriented

Dan is a 6-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix weighing 69 pounds. He’s a sweet, affectionate guy who loves being close to his person and is happiest when he’s getting attention.

  • People-focused and affectionate: Dan likes to stay close to his person and will often come right over and automatically sit at their feet for attention. If the pets stop, he may politely nudge his person a few times to let them know he’d happily like more.
  • Smart and treat motivated: Dan responds very well to “sit” and enjoys “find it” games. He’s especially fond of cheese and may happily follow his person around in hopes of getting another tasty treat.
  • Mellow with a playful side: Dan has an overall mellow demeanor, but he can get a little bouncy when he becomes especially excited.
  • Manageable on leash: Dan pulls a bit on leash but is very manageable.

Dan will do best with appropriately matched dogs or as a solo dog with well-matched canine friends.
