Intake type
Stray; adopted and returned after two days.
Handling
Generally easy to leash and rekennel. Can be slightly hesitant in unfamiliar areas but typically warms up quickly with encouragement and treats. Affectionate and enjoys pets, particularly butt scratches.
Activities/Motivation
Enjoys sniffing, exploring, and playing with toys, especially balls. Highly food-motivated and frequently checks in with handlers for treats. May become fixated on chewing toys and sticks.
Training
Knows sit and often offers it for treats. May respond to down and come inconsistently. Can catch treats midair and is generally responsive to food-based redirection.
Leash etiquette
Generally walks well on leash with minimal to mild pulling. Checks in with handlers regularly and is usually easy to redirect around distractions.
Reactivity
Shows interest in other dogs and may stare, pull toward them, or become distracted by barking dogs. Has generally remained manageable and redirectable without escalating during observed outings. May show mild fear or uncertainty toward unfamiliar objects, such as a sprinkler pipe.
Jumpy/mouthy
May jump up toward handlers when excited or seeking attention. Occasionally takes treats with a hard mouth when aroused.
Playgroup
Has not participated in PG, read dog-to-dog eval notes.
Foster
Has not participated in foster.
Offsite
Read foster field trip notes.
Other notes
Has shown possible resource guarding of balls and other toys, including reluctance to release them. Has been redirected or traded away from toys using high-value treats, though his willingness to trade varies. Remove extra toys when needed and use treats to facilitate safe exchanges rather than forcibly taking items.
Staff Notes 10/13/2026
Recent adoption, returned after 2 days. Surrendering party reported that dog would walk in between wife's legs, becoming a trip hazard. Wife is in poor health so adopter decided that they were not ready for a dog at this time. Handling and dog-dog evaluation notes are up to date. Dog can be made available for adoption.B
Other Notes 10/13/2026
Summary of field trip notes: Barley went on a field trip to Crab Cove in Alameda for a waterfront walk. He was calm during the car ride and slightly hesitant when loading and unloading, possibly due to his recent neuter surgery. Barley walked nicely on leash with minimal pulling and enjoyed stopping to sniff. He generally ignored passing strangers but calmly accepted petting from those who approached. He showed little interest in larger dogs and mild curiosity toward smaller dogs but was easily redirected to continue walking. Barley ignored geese and pigeons on the ground but showed interest in birds flying overhead and squirrels, occasionally wanting to chase but remaining manageable on leash. He demonstrated knowledge of sit, particularly when treats were visible and paired with his preferred hand signal. Barley startled at a water fountain and running water from a bottle, preferring to drink water pooled on the ground, but showed no significant reaction to loud aircraft flying overhead. He was otherwise calm and relaxed throughout the outing, enjoying sniffing and watching the ocean.
Handling Eval 10/4/2026
Background: Brought in stray by ACO on 9/28/26. Given yellow dot on intake. Staff noted dog was scared but warms up and was tolerant of all handling for intake procedures, including vaccines. Handling evaluation on 10/2/26.
O: Neutral posture at front of kennel. Wide soft wagging tail and soft face. Easy to leash. Walked with little pulling down the hallway, following handlerbx00s lead when changing direction. Neutral posture, relaxed musculature. In the yard with dropped leash, dog urinated and defecated immediately then marked several places at different times during the outing.B Approached seated handler with soft face and loose body language. Sat with verbal cue plus lure. Took treats with moderate mouth, sometimes soft, sometimes with teeth lightly touching hand. Soft wagging tail when touched on head, neck, chest, and base of tail. Sensitivity to handling was tested during multiple interactions as dog moved away when handler stopped for consent checks. Ran with loose rocking horse gait and relaxed open mouth when ball was tossed across the yard and played three rounds of fetch then walked away while chewing on tennis ball. Handler sat in chair and patted lap. Dog trotted over with loose, relaxed musculature and jumped up on chair, squeezing behind handler to sit in chair. Soft face when handler stood and petting dog around the chin and head. Mild pulling in the hallway walking back to the kennel. Entered kennel ahead of handler and was relaxed while handling around head and neck for removal of slip leash.Observations are consistent with Crew and Yellow volunteer notes to date. Other volunteer notes indicate dog sometimes jumps up for treats and petting has been observed to increase level of arousal, resulting in dog jumping on handler.B
A: Approaches handler with verbal encouragement or for treats and toys and shows enjoyment with pets. Appears to enjoy toy play such as fetch. Walks well on leash. Knows some basic commands (Sit). Possibly house trained (eliminates immediately in the yard). Yellow for volunteer handling: Some high arousal/jumping on handler for treats or when stimulated by physical touch/petting, but is easy to leash, walk, and re-kennel. Consider for Green if recommended by volunteers.B
P: Make available for adoption. Recommend adopters continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Unknown how this dog may behave around children.B B

Dog-To-Dog Evaluation 10/1/2026
S: Dog-dog evaluation with a male and female tester dog. Tester dogs selected due to their ability to politely greet and not escalate conflict.
O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. Some whining as he watched the testers through the fence. Inside the yard, dog approached the male tester. Maneuvered around to his rear to sniff, tail high and wagging fast. Followed the tester as he moved away. Female approached, sniffed her nose-to-nose with tail high and wagging fast. Very slight hackles on back but body language generally relaxed. Explored the yard on his own for the remainder of the evaluation.B
A: Independent, Medium Energy, Medium Contact, Neutral Social Dynamic, no Corrections or Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 2-3.
P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

| Behavior In Cars | Calm! A little careful during loading & unloading, but he'd had his neuter surgery earlier that week, so he might have still been feeling tender. He didn't stay seated the whole time, but was steady enough that he wasn't tumbling all over the car when we braked for stop signs, etc. Vaguely interested in sniffing out windows, also liked to poke his head up between the seats to get some scritches. |
| On-Leash Behavior | Walked nicely. Only pulled once or twice, and the rest of the time he was happy to mosey along and stop to sniff things periodically. Only yanked once when he got scared by a water fountain, but just danced out to max leash distance and didn't try to escape/pull further. |
| Behavior around strangers | He met a couple strangers while we were out and allowed them to pet him, though he wasn't overly invested in them. Most people walking past he just looked at, but didn't seem invested in getting to know. |
| Dog-to-dog behavior | Larger dogs: Generally looked at and then ignored Smaller dogs: Showed vague interest in greeting, but didn't seem aggressive or overly invested in it, was not hard to encourage to keep walking. |
| Behavior around sm. animals | Geese - no interest Pigeons - no interest when on ground, but he was interested in a flock that flew overhead Squirrels - he did kinda wanna chase those, but didn't try to yank my arm off and wasn't too stubborn to redirect and keep moving |
| Commands/Tricks | Selective knowledge of sit - he definitely knows it, but he's picky about which hand sign he'll respect and it goes best if he knows you have a treat in hand. |
| Other Observations? | Didn't try to eat goose poop! Did want to check out a squirrel carcass, but wasn't difficult to pull away and redirect. He seemed scared of or nervous about running water? Fascinated by looking at the ocean, but a water fountain and water bottle both startled him and then he would only drink water pooled on the ground, rather than from a spigot. Made some deep snorting/grunting noises, I think mainly when he was trying to sniff deeply? Also the Blue Angels flew overhead and he didn't freak out about the loud noises! Overall he was just a happy, chill boy who liked gazing at the ocean. |
