She needed some encouragement to enter the car but settled quickly and remained calm and quiet throughout the ride. Tawny walked nicely on a loose leash with minimal pulling and frequently checked in with the volunteer. She was neutral toward unfamiliar people and showed mild interest in a small dog, pulling slightly toward it with a wagging tail and open mouth. She ignored another small dog barking at her and showed no significant reaction to shorebirds or crows. Tawny appeared to understand sit when prompted with a hand gesture and treat, though the cue was not formally tested. She was affectionate and frequently sought closeness with the volunteer, leaning her head against them. Tawny occasionally startled when touched or approached from above but otherwise tolerated handling well, including a bath after the outing. The volunteer described her as gentle, affectionate, and low-to-medium energy.

Handling Eval 10/10/2026

BACKGROUND: Brought in stray by ACO on 10/3/26. Given Yellow dot on intake. Dog tolerated all handling for intake, including vaccines.B

O: Dog was standing with front feet on kennel door and hopping up and down on back feet. With the door open, dog retreated, lowered her head, and tucked tail. Easy to leash as she slowly walked out of the kennel. Tail tucked, lowered/tucked body language while walking in the hall ahead of handler. In the yard with leash dropped. Dog approached handler with lowered head, fully tucked tail. Sat with verbal cue. Took treats gently while wagging tucked tail. Followed tossed squeaky toy and ball but did not pick up. Followed handler closely while walking with dropped leash in the yard. Leaned against handler with wagging tail and lowered headB being pet over head, neck, chest, shoulders, back. Tolerated teeth check. Walked with loose leash back to kennel.B Entered kennel ahead of handler and was relaxed while handling around head and neck for removal of slip leash.Handling evaluation observations are consistent with volunteer observations to date.

A: Dog currently appears overwhelmed in the shelter environment. Readily approaches handler and shows enjoyment with pets, but appears submissive/appeasing with handling. Walks well on leash. Knows some basic commands (sit). Unknown if housetrained (did not eliminate in the yard). Yellow for volunteer handling: Dog is overwhelmed and exhibits appeasement behaviors when handled. Consider for Green if recommended by volunteers.B

P: Make available for adoption. Recommend adopters continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Unknown how this dog may behave around children. Disclose that this dog appears somewhat fearful and overwhelmed in the shelter. Expect behavior to change as dog becomes more comfortable.B

Dog-To-Dog Evaluation 10/8/2026

S: Dog-dog evaluation during AM playgroups.

O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. In the yard with 2 other dogs, dog generally watches them play from a distance. Body language is soft and relaxed. Dog will startle if another dog approaches her without her seeing it. Lowers body and moves away when the other dogs approach.B

A: Independent, Low Energy, Low Contact, Neutral Social Dynamic, no Corrections or Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 2-3.

P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

animalName Tawny
Location Tawata Park, Alameda
Behavior In Cars Great! Wonderful passenger! Needed a little encouragement to get in due to probably never having been in a car before, then he settled in quite nicely, no whining/barking/etc.
On-Leash Behavior Great! Very little to no pulling. Very gentle dog.
Behavior around strangers Neutral, noticed humans but no reaction.
Dog-to-dog behavior Saw a small dog - she pulled toward the small dog a little bit with tail wagging and mouth slightly open. Another time a smaller dog was barking at her, she noticed but ignored the barking.
Behavior around sm. animals Nothing! Noticed all of the shorebirds/crow.
Commands/Tricks Did not test, but seemed to understand sit when I motioned to her, with a treat in my hand.
Other Observations? Tawny is incredible sweet, loves being close, checks in a lot when walking, seems very trusting (she let me give her a bath afterward and seemed to be looking at me for "It's ok", leaned into me with her head a bunch). Very chill on leash, medium to low energy. Likes treats. Startled with touch from above or approaching, but not every time.

Description

Tawny – Affectionate, Gentle, and Playful

Meet Tawny, a 3-year-old, 57-pound Pit Bull Terrier mix with a heart full of love and a talent for making people feel special!

  • Lovely Walking Companion: Tawny walks nicely on a loose leash and frequently checks in with her person. She enjoys exploring but never stays away for long before returning for attention.
  • Affectionate Lovebug: Tawny loves being close to her people and often leans her head against them to soak up affection. Offer her some pets and cheese, and you’ll quickly become her favorite person!
  • Smart & Polite: She responds to “sit,” may offer her paw for treats, and takes treats gently.
  • Playful & Dog Social: Tawny enjoys playing chase with her human and plays well with other dogs in playgroup. She may occasionally show interest in a dog on walks but generally ignores them and continues on her way.

Tawny would do best with appropriately matched dogs or as a solo dog with well-matched canine friends.
