Handling Eval 10/17/2026

Background: Brought in as protective custody by Oakland Police Department on 10/5/26. Given Yellow dot on intake. No handling notes provided on intake.B Dog has been taken out by Yellow volunteers during her protective custody hold. Volunteers noted dog was initially anxious and exit seeking bx00 pulling towards fences, keeping body low and keeping distance from handler. Most recently volunteer notes indicate dog initially may bark and back away from unfamiliar handlers but takes tossed treats and quickly becomes comfortable, climbing into handlerbx00s lap with soft and wiggy body language after a short introduction period. Dog has been attending playgroup and is relaxed and playful around other dogs. See in-shelter dog-dog notes for details.B Handling evaluation on 10/16/26.

O: Dog greeted at door with wide side-to-side wagging tail and loose body language. Bounced up and down at the door, but easy to leash as she stepped down to come out. Walked on leash with moderate to hard pulling, leaning into the leash. Bounced around on handler with some light mouthing on entering the yard. Walked away when handler stood still and turned slightly away. Urinated and defecated immediately outside. Walked well with less pulling on leash in the yard. Approached handler with fast wagging tail and soft face. Leaned into pets all over head, neck, chest, back with relaxed musculature and loose wagging tail throughout interaction. Pushed body against handler and continued wagging with handling. Sits on verbal cue and/or hand signal. Did not respond to down. Took treats with soft mouth, no teeth. Followed tossed toys and balls. Picked up ball and played independently for an extended period of time. Handler crouched and called dog over during play. Dog trotted over with loose wagging tail, bounced around on handler and jumped up to mouth handler at the neck. Teeth touched skin but no teeth pressure. Handler stood. Dog continued to bounce around the playing with a ball. Did not react to another dog and handler in the adjacent yard. When the other dog came to the fenceline, this dog walked to the fenceline and sniffed nose to nose through the fence with relaxed musculature. Second handler approached the fence. Dog did not acknowledge second handler. Dog walked away from the fence when called and continued to play with ball. Walked well on leash returning to kennel. Followed tossed treat into kennel. Relaxed while handling around head and neck for removal of slip leash.

A: Approaches handlers readily and shows enjoyment with pets. Very playful with toys, both independent play and with handler directed play. Treat motivated and takes treats with a soft mouth. Knows some basic commands (sit). Can pull hard on leash but walked well on leash after potty break. Possibly house trained (eliminates immediately in the yard). No issues kenneling. Yellow for volunteer handling: can be mouthy with play. Consider for Green if recommended by volunteers.B

P: Make available for adoption. Recommend adopters continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Unknown how this dog may behave around children. Dog can be mouthy with play which may make a home with young children less suitable. Adopters should be aware that dog was initially somewhat fearful when interacting with new people on intake. These behaviors may be shelter-influenced, and may change depending on the dogbx00s environment.

Dog-To-Dog Evaluation 10/8/2026

S: Dog-dog evaluation during AM playgroups.

O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. Integrated into a group of 6 dogs during AM playgroups. Dog immediately engages in chase-style play with the other dogs. Very relaxed body language for the hour duration with no issues noted.B

A: Chase, Medium Energy, Medium Contact, Neutral Social Dynamic, no Corrections or Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 5-10.

P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

Description

Meet Fancy, a 1-year-old, 44-pound Pit Bull Terrier mix who loves toys, pets, and having fun!

  • People-Loving: Fancy enjoys affection and happily leans into pets. She may be shy around new people at first, but treats and a little time help her warm up.
  • Toy Enthusiast: Fancy loves chasing balls and can happily entertain herself with toys. She also enjoys playing with her people!
  • Social Pup: Fancy has enjoyed chase-style play with other dogs in playgroups and could be a great match for a compatible canine companion.
  • Learning Her Manners: Fancy knows “sit,” takes treats gently, and can walk nicely on leash after a chance to sniff and explore. She’s still working on leash skills and can get bouncy and mouthy when excited, so positive reinforcement and continued training will help her succeed.

Fancy is looking for a home ready for all the fun, energy, and learning that come with a young dog. She could enjoy life with a well-matched dog friend or as a solo pup with opportunities for doggy playdates! Click here to learn how to adopt and submit your adoption questionnaire.
