Caspian

BACKGROUND: Seized with another male dog (possibly offspring). Dog was given green dot on intake. Staff were able to handle dog for intake procedures, including vaccines. SHELTER HANDLING: Volunteers and staff have been able to leash, walk, and pet dog during outings with no issues. Dog has been relaxed with all handling in the shelter. Volunteers note that he is very treat motivated, can be somewhat jumpy, and enjoys pets. Green for volunteer handling. Dog can be made available for adoption after hold period.

S: Dog-dog evaluation with a male and female tester dog. Tester dogs selected due to their ability to politely greet and not escalate conflict.

O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. Tail wagging softly as he sniffed the testers through the fence. Inside the yard, dog approached the testers. Sniffed the male all over, forward body language, some hackles. Did a shake-off and followed the male as he trotted away. Approached the female, sniffed at her rear and followed her continuing sniffing at her rear. Tail high and wagging, some hackles, then mounted her. Steered off by a water squirt.B

A: Learning Dog Skills, Medium Energy, Medium Contact, Neutral-Forward Social Dynamic, no Corrections or Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 2-3.

P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.

Meet Caspian, a 6-year-old, 45-pound Pit Bull Terrier mix with a love for treats and human attention!

• Affection Seeker: Caspian enjoys getting out for walks and spending time with people. He’s comfortable being handled and happily accepts pets.
• Smart Cookie: This treat-motivated guy is a great candidate for reward-based training. He can get a little jumpy when excited, so he’ll benefit from practicing his manners.
• Curious About Dogs: Caspian has shown interest in meeting other dogs and is still learning his canine social skills. He’ll benefit from thoughtful introductions to compatible dogs.

Caspian could be a good match for a home with a well-suited canine companion or as a solo dog with opportunities to make dog friends. With positive reinforcement and continued guidance, he’ll be ready to build a great life with his new family!
