Handling Eval 10/8/2026
Background: Background: Owner surrender on 10/7/26. Surrendering due to behavior: barks a lot and escapes often. Given Yellow dot on intake. Dog was fearful and tried to hide under the table on intake. Was muzzle wrapped for intake procedures including vaccines, but otherwise easy to handle. Handling evaluation on 10/8/26.
O: Retreated and avoidant of leashing in kennel. Lowered/tucked body language and tucked tail, resistant to leash pressure walking through the hallway. B In the yard with dropped leash, dog retreated. Approached handler to sniff, did not take tossed treats. Retreated to the fence. Low tail and closed mouth while pacing the fenceline. Retreated from handler when approached. Handler stepped on leash to move to a different yard. Dog was resistant to leash pressure, but followed handler with verbal encouragement. Continued walking with softer body and face. Sat down when handler approached. Tolerated pets all over head, neck, chest and back. Closed mouth, occasionally averted gaze with hands around her head. Pricked ears and sniffed at squeaker toy but did not pick up. Entered kennel ahead of handler and was relaxed while handling around head and neck for removal of slip leash.
A: Dog entered the shelter less than 24 hours prior to evaluation. Dog is fearful of handling and somewhat shut down. Expect behavior to change as she becomes more comfortable. Somewhat neutral/avoidant of touch at this time. Resistant to leash pressure. Blue for volunteer handling: Dog is fearful and avoidant of touch and leashing. Consider for Yellow if recommended by volunteers.
P: Make available for adoption. Recommend adopters continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Unknown how this dog may behave around children; however previous owner reported that dog was good with children under 12 years old and teenagers.
