Handling Eval 10/17/2026
BACKGROUND: Red Dot on intake 10/8/26. Unable to handle. dog was found on rp's property. Dog immediately growled with interaction. Catch pole used to capture dog and dog was placed straight into kennel without intake. Dog attempted to take flight on catch pole. Updated to Blue dot on 10/13/26. Taken out by Crew volunteer with staff permission. Handled by CA for intake. Updated to evaluate. Allow additional time to acclimate to the shelter. Dog is going out on a daily basis with staff and/or crew volunteers.UPDATE 10/24/26Dog is being handled and interacting with crew volunteers and staff on a daily basis. Handling notes are consistent across five individual handers. Observations are summarized below.
O: Dog is generally quiet inside kennel. He may vocalize, with frantic jumping or climbing at the kennel door when handlers approach to leash him. Sometimes barks at passing people. Gets down and easy to leash when the door is opened.B Has exhibited context-dependent barrier reactivity toward dogs, particularly in confined areas such as when dogs are passing his kennel or when he is in the big coop. Reactivity has been manageable with distance, treat scatters, or toy engagement. During play group, he has not exhibited barrier reactivity towards other dogs and greets other relaxed groups of playgroup dogs at the gate with loose body language and loose wagging tail.B During crew outings, he walks well on leash, engages readily in treat-based training, and demonstrates good responsiveness to cues (knows sit and touch) and lured movement. Takes treats with soft mouth. Consistently approaches handlers for pets and has been handled all over head, neck, chest, back. Leans into pets and turns to lean in again after pauses for consent checks. Relaxed musculature and loose wagging tail, soft face throughout handling. Plays fetch with and bounces around with other soft toys. Upon return to kennel, may grab leash with mouth and pull.B During an outing when an unfamiliar staff person entered the yard, dog kept distance from the person. Readily approached familiar person in the yard.B
A: Readily approaches familiar handlers and shows enjoyment with pets. Treat and toy motivated. Has some basic training (walks well on leash, knows sit, touch, spin). Possibly house trained (eliminates immediately in the yard). Blue for volunteer handling: Dog may grab and pull on leash on re-rentering the kennel. Was initially very avoidant of leashing and may need some time and repeated interactions to feel comfortable interacting. Consider for Yellow if recommended by volunteers.B
P: Make available for adoption by appointment. Adopters should be aware that this dog may be fearful and sensitive to environmental stimuli in some situations. This behavior may be shelter-specific and may be completely unrelated to behavior outside of the shelter. Expect behavior to change as the dog gets more comfortable. Adopters should continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Unknown how this dog may behave around children. Recommend volunteers use of high-value food and double-leash on re-kenneling.

Dog-To-Dog Evaluation 10/15/2026
S: Dog-dog evaluation with a male dog. Tester dog selected due to his ability to politely greet and not escalate conflict.
O: At the gate, dog was calm and non-reactive. Mostly ignored the tester through the gate. Leashes held and dog entered the yard. Approached the tester, stood still with tail high and still. Walked away on his own and explored the yard before eliminating. Started bouncing around towards the tester so leashes were dropped. Male tester chased him around for a bit, then the two engaged in wrestle style play. Body language was relaxed as he bounced around and play bowed.B
A: Wrestle, Medium-HIgh Energy, Medium Contact, Neutral Social Dynamic, no Corrections or Conflict observed, Playgroup Size 2-3.
P: Recommend placement with appropriately matched dogs, or placed as a solo dog with appropriate dog friends.
